Villarreal boss Unai Emery was left feeling short changed with their 1-0 Champions League win over Bayern Munich as Arnaut Danjuma’s early goal set the Yellow Submarine on course for a historic results in the first leg of the tie.
The seventh club on the La Liga table with 45 points turned in a fantastic performance at the Estadio de la Ceramica to upset the form guide and beat the Bundesliga giants and six-times European champions Bayern.
The experienced gaffer who won the Europa League trophy against Manchester United in Gdańsk is currently in a bid to win the Champions League for Villarreal since joining the Spanish club on 23rd, of July 2020 when he was sacked by Arsenal on 29th of November 2019.
In an interview after the match last Wednesday night the Spanish tactician disclosed that, “We are here to try to compete and reach the semifinals. We are not going to dwell on how well we played today, that we have won and that we have competed and been better against Bayern,” Emery told reporters in a post-match interview.
When he was questioned on his team’s qualification to the next stage of the competition he stated that, “I am happy but cautious. We have 90 minutes left and I want to beat Bayern, knowing that it is very difficult. And if I don’t beat them I’m not going to be satisfied, I’m going to be frustrated, regardless of whether we played a good game today.”
Villarreal will host Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish La Liga over the weekend before they trek to Allianz Arena in Munich next Tuesday.
