Asante Kotoko, the reigning champions of the Ghana Premier League, have formally resigned from the Top Six competition in 2022.
On Thursday afternoon, the club sent a social media announcement explaining their decision to decline the invitation due to “sporting considerations.”
“We have this afternoon written officially to GHALCA, informing the welfare body of our decision not to partake in this year’s Ghalca Top Six tournament. Our decision was purely based on sporting reasons.”
The vice chairman of GHALCA, John Ansah, justified the decision to modify the tournament’s Top four to Top six earlier this month.
The league champions were begged by the vice chairman, “We apologise to Kotoko fans. We are not looking down on them, but we need to keep Ghanaian reps for Africa highly active before their African campaign begins.”
The preseason Top Six competition will begin on August 14 and run through August 31 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, according to the announcement made by the famous preseason tournament’s organizers, GHALCA.
The initial teams scheduled to compete in the tournament are Asante Kotoko, Medeama, Bechem United, Karela United, Great Olympics, and Hearts of Oak; however, following Kotoko’s declaration on Thursday, the organizers will have to consider another club.
An influential journalist who is close to the present Kotoko management claimed earlier that the team would participate in the competition with its newly formed juvenile team while preparing for a European Tour before their CAF Champions League campaign.
It is unknown whether Prosper Narteh Ogum’s reported resignation played a role in the Porcupine Warriors’ decision not to compete in the GHALCA top six tournament this year.
Due to Mudasiru Salifu’s sale to FC Tiraspol of Moldova, Kotoko is most likely to lose their talented shooter to Italian club Udinese, they have not added any players to the team, and according to information acquired by the editors of www.atspo.com, Nana Yaw Amponsah’s administration failed to pay the players for three months.
