At the Stade de l’Amitié Général Mathieu Kérékou, Isaac Oppong, referred to as Sunyani Neymar, scored in the last minute for Asante Kotoko for their first CAF Champions League goal since November 9th, 2020.
Kotoko’s last CAF Champions League game was against Al Hilal Omdurman. They lost the two legs on a 3-0 aggregate, but before that, they had defeated Nouadhibou, who had medical issues relating to the team, at Baba Yara Sports Stadium on December 6th, 2021.
Isaac Oppong’s goal has been considered monumental since Kotoko has failed to win at away venues in the CAF Champions for a long time, and it is his first goal on his CAF Champion League debut after he scored on his Ghana Premier League debut last season.
He has stayed away from the team due to injuries, and his last goal for Kotoko was scored at Dun’s Park on the third week of the 2021/2022 league season.
Isaac Oppong and the team’s other six players made their debuts in African club competition matches. In a trio of attacks upfront, he was accompanied by Georges Mfegue and Steve Mukwala, and he worked from the flanks with Mfegue and Mukwala, being the leading marksman.
The match tempo was not surprising given that fans in Burkina Faso had tagged the draw of the two teams as historical clubs in their respective countries looking for a fresh start on the continental chessboard, so it was no surprise that it nearly remained barren until Isaac Oppong Sunyani Neymar got the last kick, which was a goal.
The squad is slated to arrive in Kumasi on Tuesday to begin preparations for the second leg, which will take place on Sunday, September 18th, 2022 at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Isaac Oppong’s official Twitter account, @Oppong 14, featured a caption expressing gratitude to his mother for the victory in Benin, which was spotted by the diligent and enthused editors of www.atspo.com.
“I dedicate this win to my mom, the fans of this great club who have always believed in us and supported us regardless of the result and to my manager, Dr Charles Antoh. Fabulous!”
