Former General Manager of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Nana Akwasi Gyambibi, popularly regarded as Nana Gyambibi Coker, has reacted to a press release circulated in the media landscape in Ghana on Wednesday, September 21st, 2022.
He was a member of the Management team that had Nana Yaw Amponsah’s administration as their immediate successor; he worked with the then-Executive Board Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei, and had Mr. George Amoako as the CEO, Kennedy Boakye-Ansah as the Communications Director, Isaac Donkor as the Operations Manager, and Nana Kwame Dankwa as an Executive Member.
Nana Gyambibi Coker, a former Chief Executive Officer at Dove FM, served as a General Manager at Kotoko, but their term was dissolved in June 2020, when Manhyia Palace wanted the club to have a club licence organisational structure.
Last Sunday, September 18, 2022, the club was defeated on penalties by Rail Club du Kadiogo at Baba Yara Sports Stadium. After winning away by one goal, they lost at home by the same score, forcing a penalty shootout for the qualifying team.
After the game, the numerous spectators screamed abuse and obscenities at the coaching staff, the technical team, the playing staff, and, to a lesser extent, the club’s Board of Directors.
After the loss, the fans’ aggressive behaviour persisted the next day. Other supporters went to radio shows to express their frustration with the club’s administrators. During Dr. Kwame Kyei’s leadership, a devoted supporter who worked as a security guard for the club and, at one point, helped arrange Kjetil Zachariassen’s resignation from his position as the team’s trainer.
In an interview with the host of Fox FM, Rockson Adjei Yeboah, known as Papa Rock, Seidu Mba, the supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, sent a word of caution to the management team of the club that he will mastermind for the new coach, Seydou Zerbo, to vacate his post at the club, as he did in 2019 at the club’s training grounds.
This statement by the fans prompted Kotoko Ultras, a supporters group allied with the club’s current management, to issue a Press Release in which Nana Gyambibi Coker and other sports journalists, along with some of the perpetrators, are forewarned to stay away from the club, especially this coming Sunday, if they value their lives.
Nana Gyambibi Coker, the former General Manager and Special Assistant to the then-Executive Board Chairman, replied to the publication made by Kotoko Ultras on his official Twitter account.
“Obiaa boa! They’re just liars and hypocrites! In fact, the attacks on me were mere attempts/agendas to defame me in the annals of Kotoko by some few known people. They’re just jokers when they think they can wipe away a true porcupine. Ultras, I pity you! “
