André Morgan Rami Ayew, a winner of the Calcio Trade Ball Order of the Star Award in 2022 and BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2011, wants to win the AFCON championship and the World Cup with Ghana.
The Ghana captain, André Ayew, has stated that his primary goal is to lead the Black Stars to a major trophy, such as the Africa Cup of Nations or the World Cup, which the 22nd World Cup is scheduled to begin in November 2022.
The West African country has not won a significant trophy since winning the 1982 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Libya and was knocked out of the group stage in the most recent AFCON in Cameroon.
The Black Stars of Ghana have gone close to ending their trophy drought in 1992, 2010, and 2015, and in 2010 and 2015, the captain was a member of the team that almost made competition history for Ghanaians.
André Ayew, 32, has been with the national team for nearly a decade and a half, rising through the ranks after making his debut in 2008 and serving as captain following the retirement of Asamoah Gyan.
Ayew played a significant role in the squad that clinched the U20 AFCON and FIFA World Cup titles. Ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, he is once again the captain of the Ghanaian Black Stars.
When the Black Stars of Ghana arrived for their friendly game against Nicaragua in Spain on Tuesday, he provided an interview with the media.
The captain of the team told Graphic Sports, “For me, to be real, I don’t have personal targets. The only personal target I had—and still have—since I joined the Black Stars was to win a trophy with the team. That’s my only target and I’ve been close several times (the 2010 AFCON and 2015 AFCON final). I won the Under-20 AFCON and won the Under-20 World Cup trophies, but my only target is to win a trophy in the Black Stars jersey, any trophy that I can win—AFCON or the World Cup trophy. That’s my goal, that’s my aim, and that’s what I pray and work hard for every day.”
