Barcelona lost unexpectedly to Inter Milan 1-0 on Tuesday night in the Champions League at the San Siro.
While loosing for the second time in Europe was undoubtedly a talking point, another was how an apparent handball committed late in the game by Denzel Dumfries was not adjudged a penalty for the visitors.
The hosts were found to be flawless in what seemed to be a stonewall penalty, even though VAR first viewed the ruling as favouring Inter.
After the clash, the referee was interrogated by the Catalan side about the logic behind why they were not handed a spot-kick, the head coach, Xavi, described the night at San Siro as unjust.
At the post-match press conference, research conducted by the astute editing team in collaboration with Santi Ovalle, an author for a website affiliated with Barcelona, cadenaser.com, revealed an answer from the referees at San Siro.
The Slovenian centre-man, Slavko Vincic, said in a post-match conference, “VAR told me it wasn’t a penalty, but no reason to justify the decision was explained.”
It has to be clarified that the refereeing was alarmingly poor since Dumfries’ unsuccessful attempt to head the ball out of danger, which resulted in the inadvertent handball, was not viewed as a clear-cut judgement.
This and other poor decisions by referee Slavko Vincic at San Siro last Tuesday night prompted Xavi Hernandez to voice out to the press after the game, he was very angry at the decisions of the referee and he stated, “I’m angry. The referees should come out and explain their decisions because we don’t understand anything. I asked the referee to explain his decisions after the match and he refused. “What we witnessed today was an injustice.”
The Catalans also had a goal scored by Pedri chalked out for an unintentional handball by Ansu Fati, even though it should have stood in accordance with the most recent FIFA regulations, in addition to the error noted above and other apparent ones.
