Manchester United defeated Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage in a spirited contest, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring the game-winning goal in stoppage time.
The Reds appeared to be heading for a 1-1 draw with the London club, but their Argentinian youngster snatched all three points with the game’s final kick.
Since Federico Macheda, who is 17 years and 226 days old, scored a 90th-minute winner against Aston Villa in April 2009, the Argentinean, who is 18 years and 135 days old, became the youngest player to do it in the Premier League.
Since he made the transition to Old Trafford’s senior team, Garnacho has been in excellent form. In his last four appearances in all competitions, he has scored twice and provided two assists. He scored the game-winning goal against Real Sociedad in the Europa League and provided two assists against Aston Villa in the EFL Cup.
Garnacho’s burst of speed helped him beat the Fulham defenders to the pass during last Sunday’s game at Craven Cottage. He then took his shot right away, squeezing the ball past Leno to snag all three points before the World Cup break and spark scenes of histrionics on the field and among the loud away fans.
The importance of Alejandro at Manchester United has been stated clearly by Fernandes, who has emerged as a talismanic figure for the club and once again assumed captaincy duties against Fulham. Fernandes also marked his 100th Premier League appearance for Manchester United with an assist for Christian Eriksen.
After captaining his 100th Premier League game, Bruno, the Portuguese playmaker, indicated the youngster’s role in the team set up by Erik ten Hag in an interview with MUTV.
He said, “His (Alejandro Garnacho) work rate and talent make a big difference for us, we know he can give us goals, assists and the joy of football. No one likes to be on the bench, the attitude he has coming on is fantastic. He is getting his rewards.”
