At the Baba Yara Stadium on Wednesday in the 2022–2023 BetPawa Premier League, Legon Cities held Asante Kotoko to a 1–1 draw.
Maxwell Konadu was in his third game against Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo, following two African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers in 2021.
Maxwell Konadu was seeking victory after defeating Great Olympics at home in the last league match, and a victory would have allowed him to get revenge on Seydou Zerbo after the Burkinabe defeated him in their previous encounter at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
After receiving an intelligent long pass from an inform central defender, Sheriff Mohammed, and moving into the penalty area to be challenged for a spot kick, Steve Mukwala’s early spot kick separated Asante Kotoko and Legon Cities at halftime in Kumasi.
The Royals’ game plan slipped into the hands of the host, but they were not a goal-threatening side before halftime at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, but Maxwell Konadu planned and executed a strategy after halftime that handed them a goal.
After goalkeeper Fredrick Asare had made two saves inside the penalty box, Mohammed Sadat, the agile midfielder, surged past Asante Kotoko’s defence to score the equalizer in the 50th minute.
As the end-to-end action persisted, both sides attempted to increase their efforts by attacking from all angles on the pitch, but they were unsuccessful, particularly a powerful strike by Enoch Morrison, which was saved by the goalpost and prevented a defeat against Maxwell Konadu’s Legon Cities.
Maxwell Konadu stated after the game that a draw against Zerbo is a fair result since Legon Cities decided to play to their preferred strategy at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Maxwell told StarTimes, “I believe that in the second half they saw that they could go and win the game; that is what we spoke about; we told them we are not coming here to defend; we will play our game no matter what, and that’s what happened.”
He went on to say that a 1-1 tie was a perfect result given the performances of both teams.
He indicated, “We opened up and tried to equalize the goal and take the lead, but it didn’t come that way. Having said that, I must say that both teams played well, both teams created chances, and I think a draw is a fair reflection of the game.”
