Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s central defender, Sherrif Mohammed, has gained a call-up to the Black Galaxies after eight BetPawa Premier League games.
After signing a three-year contract with Asante Kotoko from EurAfrica FC for an undisclosed fee, the 20-year-old tough-tackling defender has participated in all eight league games for the reigning Ghana Premier League champions.
Annor Walker, head coach of the Black Galaxies, has announced a preliminary group of 40 players for the team to begin training at the Ghanaman Soccer of Excellence in Prampram in preparation for the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Asante Kotoko’s Mohammed Sherrif was not featured among the central defenders on the November shortlist, but he was called up last Wednesday to join the squad.
The central defender, who has been a standout in the Porcupine Warriors’ back four since joining from the lower division in August 2022, will compete for a starting spot with Konadu Yiadom of Hearts of Oak, Michael Enu of Bibiani GoldStars, Emmanuel Anaful of Bechem United, Solomon Adomako of the Accra Great Olympics, Kwadwo Adde and Godwin Abusah of Karela United and FC Samartex, respectively.
Coach Annor Walker confirmed the talented centre-back’s invitation to the team last Wednesday in an interview with Ghanasportspage.com.
Annor Walker disclosed, “Yes, I have invited Sherrif Mohammed from Kotoko. I called him to come for me to observe his performance before his name was sent to CAF. He came two days ago (Wednesday). He trained and played a test match with us.”
Sherrif Mohammed had been given the possibility of being included in the final list that would be submitted to CAF, according to Annor Walker, who explained why.
“I invited him because I wasn’t impressed with the performance of the central defenders I brought with what I saw in league matches. I saw Sherrif during FC Samartex’s game against Kotoko, but I thought he was old. I got to know that he is young and not that older, so I said let him come for me to see him. I saw a different performance when he came, and I brought him to look at him,” Annor Walker explained to Ghanasportspage.com.
