Abdul Fatawu Mohammed, the current captain of Accra Hearts of Oak and a member of the WAFU Nations Cup team for the 2019 competition, has finally revealed that he has been told to permanently leave the club.
The former player of Real Tamale United (RTU), Fatawu Mohammed, became the captain of Accra Hearts of Oak in 2018 when defender Inusah Musah left the captaincy and departed from the rainbow outfit.
He has appeared in 118 games and scored five goals for the club since arriving in 2013, and he was captain of the squad under former coach Samuel Boadu when the team won the Premier League and the MTN FA Cup in Ghana in 2020/2021.
According to a tip received by the editors of www.atspo.com last Wednesday, the Rainbows have notified three players, namely Fatawu Mohammed, Junior Kaaba, and Mohammed Alhassan, that they must find a new club.
Fatawu Mohammed, the Phobian captain, has recently admitted that those rumours are factual, and as a result, he may leave the club after eleven years.
The captain, in an interview with Ghanasportspage.com, revealed, “It is true. I’ve been instructed to find a club. They invited me to the office, and I was informed that our new coach, Slavko Matic, says I am no longer in his plans. I also accepted and said no problem. I have one year left on my contract with the club. Maybe we will discuss terms and conditions next week, but for now, they’ve notified me to leave.”
When asked if the decision of the club’s head coach had any immediate impact on him as a player, he stated that it had not.
Fatawu explained, “It does not affect me. In terms of football, that’s how it is, and I understand. Some will go, and others too will come, and it does not affect me because I am the first player to play for the club in almost eleven years, and I am happy about that. To me, I have set a record, and I am a legend at Accra Hearts of Oak in the local league. I won about five trophies for the club. For me leaving the club, I see it as a different challenge I am going to face, and it is part of our job.”
