Gladson Awako, the captain of the Black Galaxies and Accra Hearts of Oak, has extended his contract until December 2024.
Gladson Awako, a midfielder for Accra Hearts of Oak, has agreed to a new one-year deal with a potential renewal following successful negotiations earlier this month.
The 31-year-old midfielder joined Hearts of Oak on a three-year deal from city rivals Accra Great Olympics, forming a bantam between the two clubs; the fee for the midfielder’s switch was not disclosed.
“Gladson Awako has signed a one-year contract extension with Accra Hearts of Oak. This will keep him at the club until 2024. The contract extension has an option to further extend his stay thereafter,” an official statement from Accra Hearts of Oak read.
He has been an influential player for the rainbow outfit since his arrival in 2021, particularly as he has been at his best performance under new coach Slavko Matic, scoring two goals during his tenure.
Awako is currently in national team camp with the Black Galaxies as they prepare for the CHAN Tournament in early January in Algiers, where he commanded the squad under Annor Walker to qualify for the next year’s tournament ahead of their arch-rivals, the Nigerian Super Eagles.
The captain told Accra Hearts of Oak’s official website in an interview, “I am happy to have extended my contract with this beautiful family.” “It is amazing because this is my childhood club, and this is a club I have always wanted to play before I quit football in the future.”
The captain of Hearts of Oak added that he will still fight hard to make the club a big brand; he emphasised, “With this opportunity, I will continue to work hard and promote the brand of our glorious club. Phoooobia! Masters.”
Gladson Awako’s last Premier League game for Accra Hearts of Oak was against Accra Lions on November 17th, 2022, at Accra Sports Stadium, where he scored from a thunderbolt strike and was shown a red card before the league went on recess for the World Cup in Qatar.
