Amid the ongoing search for a new senior national team coach, former Black Stars head coach James Kwesi Appiah is willing to take on the role once more.
The former Ghana international has agreed to serve as the Black Stars’ coach for a third time following the team’s dismal exhibition at the World Cup in Qatar.
Initially, in charge of Ghana from 2012 to 2014, coach Kwesi Appiah was in charge when the Black Stars participated in the World Cup in Brazil but was fired following the competition.
After Ghana’s underwhelming performance at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, his contract was not renewed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), so he returned for a second stint in 2017, which lasted a similar two years.
Charles Akonnor was appointed after Kwesi Appiah left, then Milovan Rajevac was given a second chance, and Otto Addo eventually led the team to Qatar for the World Cup.
Otto Addo resigned after Ghana was eliminated from the group stage, leaving the top position vacant; the GFA has been looking for Otto Addo’s replacement since then.
Before Otto Addo’s resignation, some Ghanaians had been calling on the Ghana Football Association to replace him with his Technical Director, Chris Hughton.
Chris Hughton, the former coach of Brighton, and Kwesi Appiah, a member of Otto Addo’s backroom staff, have both been mentioned as candidates for the position.
“The fact that I have not come out to say I have stopped coaching, if the opportunity comes and I can help, why not, once coaching is my destiny, why not,” the former Asante Kotoko player said in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV.
Kwesi Appiah most recently managed Ghana’s lower-tier side Kenpong Football Academy, and the country’s football governing body is expected to name a new manager before the team assemblies for the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola.
