The poor turnout at the various venues for the Ghana Premier League has been attributed to poor officiating, according to Asante Kotoko Brands and Communications Director David Obeng Nyarko.
The betPawa Premier League’s major stakeholders have taken it upon themselves to find solutions to the low stadium turnout, which appears to be a source of concern in Ghanaian football circles.
This season, the domestic top division has struggled with poor stadium attendance; as an example, King Faisal earned nothing when they played Nsoatreman FC.
Moreover, the two glamorous clubs in their last home games recorded very low returns at the stadium, which is quite unusual for the league champions and the champions of the MTN FA Cup.
Kotoko supporters did not gather at Baba Yara Sports Stadium against Berekum Chelsea, and Hearts at Cape Coast Sports Stadium witnessed low support against Bechem United.
A stakeholder, the Oyerepa Sports crew, tried to find solutions to the canker of the betPawa Premier League on their show, tagged “Today’s Sports,” which had an interview with David Obeng Nyarko, the Brands and Communications Director of the defending champions of the league.
The host of Oyerepa FM Today’s Sports, Sometymer Otuo Acheampong, sought the opinion of David Obeng Nyarko on the solution for the poor attendance of fans at various stadiums.
David Obeng Nyarko, Kotoko Communications Director, attributed the low stadium attendance to poor officiating.
David revealed on Oyerepa FM/TV, “We have done our research, and there are several reasons, one of which is that people do not believe there is fairness in the game. There are people who come to the stadium but decide not to come back because of bad officiating; that is a fact.”
He later stressed on the programme on Friday morning that the organisers of the league have consistently failed to provide statistics on players’ performances in the competition.
David explained, “How we market our league is also a factor; statistics are available in other leagues, and with just a click you can have every statistic you need, but if asked who has the most passes in our league, I do not think anyone can answer that question.”
