Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana, gave GH50,000 to the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) to support the 47th SWAG Awards ceremony.
The SWAG Awards are held annually to recognise distinguished Ghanaian sportsmen and women, and SWAG will honour over 40 athletes who excelled and brought honour to the country in 2022 next weekend.
The SWAG President, Kwabena Yeboah, and Secretary General, Charles Osei Asibey, received Dr. Bawumia’s 50,000 cedis on Wednesday from a Vice President’s aide, Tamimu Issah.
Dr. Bawumia is donating 10,000 cedis from the total to the winners of two award categories: Female Footballer of the year and Sports Journalist of the year, with the remaining 30,000 cedis going to SWAG to support its operations.
Vice President Bawumia provided support for the 46th SWAG Awards last year in the form of 50,000 cedis, as well as GH10,000 for the Female Footballer of the Year and Sports Journalist of the Year, respectively.
Vice President Bawumia explained that his financial support for the two special award categories is intended to encourage female football players during his speech at the 46th SWAG Awards as the Special Guest.
The Vice President again said that his backing of the Sports Journalist of the Year award is meant to inspire sports journalists to keep making significant contributions to the nation’s sporting advancement.
Following the assistance, Dr. Bawumia’s support was once again acknowledged by SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah, who also thanked him on behalf of the Association.
Many sports organisations have benefited from the Vice President’s charitable support, including RTU, King Faisal, Hasaacas Ladies, Ampem Darkoa Ladies, and SWAG.
On January 28, 2023, the 47th MTN/Adamus SWAG Awards will take place at the Accra International Center, and Kudus Mohammed is expected to take home the night’s top honour.
Also, Daniel Afriyie Barnieh has been shortlisted to defend the award he won last year in the home-based footballer of the year category, and the 2023 shortlisted nominees are Yaw Annor, formerly of Ashantigold, Asante Kotoko’s Danlad Ibrahim, and Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, an ex-player at Hearts of Oak.
