Real Tamale United’s (RTU) David Sandan Abagna, the Sports Writers Association’s (SWAG) Most Promising Star of the Year in 2017, has joined Sudan giant club Al-Hilal.
David Abagna played in all of Ghana’s games at the CHAN tournament before being eliminated in the quarterfinals by Niger on Saturday, January 28.
Before being called up to the Algerian squad, the 24-year-old offensive midfielder played 24 league games for Real Tamale United and scored 12 goals since joining the club from Ashanti Gold Football Club in the 2021-2022 season.
In the current season, the captain of Real Tamale United (RTU) has scored nine goals and provided three assists in 16 appearances for RTU so far and has three goals in eight outings.
After a standout individual performance at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where he was named Man of the Match in Ghana’s second group match, the midfielder moves to Sudan.
According to multiple reports, the player has penned a 4-year deal that will see him play in Omdurman until 2027.
The player’s performance in Algeria was the cherry on top for Al-Hilal, and despite the fact that the Black Galaxies were defeated by the Nigerians, the Sudanese side invited him from the Black Galaxies camp in Algeria to finalize the contract in Sudan before the team arrives in Ghana.
The official Twitter account of Al-Hilal confirmed the acquisition of David Abagna into their team; they updated their handle with the caption, “Completed successfully in Algeria. Let’s welcome Black Stars midfielder David Abagna, who has been a player for Al Hilal for four years and is from Ghana’s Real Tamales.”
David Abagna has become the second Ghanaian player to play for Al Hilal; Imoro Ibrahim joined them at the end of the previous season after helping Kotoko win the betPawa Premier League under Dr. Prosper Ogum.
The 2017 Ghana FA Cup Most Promising Player will now be a part of the Al Hilal team for the 2022–23 CAF Champions League season, where they will be placed in the same group as Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.
