The Confederation of African Football (CAF) instituted in 1964 an annual football club competition contested by top-division African clubs, dubbed the CAF Champions League.
The national league champions from the previous season as well as all national leagues affiliated with CAF are used to determine which clubs are qualified.
The prize money was adjusted by CAF in 2017: US$2,500,000 is awarded to the ultimate winner and US$1,250,000 to the runners-up. In 2022, Wydad Athletic Club won the trophy for the third time in its history.

Even though the two clubs have been missing in action at the pinnacle of the CAF Champions League since 2000, they made it into the all-time table compiled by the governing body of African football.
The betPawa Premier League’s defending champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, have won the trophy twice; the first time was in 1970, and the second time, after a 12-year gap, was in 1983. Having played 145 games and accrued 241 points, they are currently in eighth place.
Accra Hearts of Oak, the current MTN FA Cup champion, have won the CAF Champions League on one occasion; they won it in 2000, the last time a Ghanaian club won the competition, and they are currently ranked 16th with 111 games played and 183 points.
