Victor James Osimhen, the current leading goal scorer in Italian Serie A with 16 goals, was the best of five players nominated for January 2023 player of the month.
The trophy will be presented during Napoli’s pre-match against Cremonese on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at 8.45 p.m. at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples.
The Nigerian, who is in his third season in the Italian Serie A, beat out players like Paulo Dybala of AS Roma, Internazionale Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, Ademola Lookman of Atlanta, and Luis Alberto of Lazio in a poll voted on by fans on serieapotm.easports.com.
The five best players of the month were chosen based on an advanced analysis of Stats Perform generated from tracking data recorded with the Hawk-Eye system.
The rating system, which was patented with K-Sport in 2010 and has been scientifically validated, takes into account not only statistical data and technical events but also positional data.
The final calculation took into account Serie A match days ranging from 16 to 20 in 2022/2023, during which the red-hot Super Eagles forward Osimhen scored five goals and recorded one assist in four league appearances for Napoli during the month.
The winner of the January EA SPORTS Player of the Month award was announced in a statement by the CEO of Italian Serie A, Luigi De Siervo.
Luigi De Siervo said, “In the month of January, Victor Osimhen has confirmed himself as an authentic Top Player, one of the strongest strikers on the international scene.”
“With five goals in five matches, the Nigerian striker consolidated his place at the top of the goalscoring chart and once again demonstrated his leading role in a team that never stops surprising,” the president said of Osimhen’s overall performance, which merited the award.
Luigi De Siervo recommended Napoli because Victor Osimhen is the third Napoli player to be awarded in the last five months.
“In fact, this is the third time in five months that a Napoli player has been awarded the Player of the Month award, a demonstration of Napoli`s ability to discover and develop great talents,” the president clarified.
