According to La Liga president Javier Tebas, other Premier League clubs, besides Manchester City, have also broken financial rules.
After a four-year investigation, English champions Manchester City were accused of more than 100 financial rule violations earlier in February.
The Manchester City Board of Directors stated that they were “surprised” by the league’s accusations, with possible penalties including expulsion from the top division.
The outspoken Spanish football president, Javier Tebas, is of the view that other Premier League clubs are also guilty of similar offences, speaking after a January transfer window in which English clubs spent heavily.
Chelsea’s acquisition of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for 121 million euros broke the record for the most expensive transfer in British history, and spending by English teams in January accounted for nearly 80% of all transactions in the top five European leagues.
Tebas revealed the period in which he criticised Manchester City’s financial expenditure in an interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Madrid.
“I criticized Manchester City (in 2017), saying everything that now appears that they will continue to investigate; I said it then, so what surprises me is that it takes so long to make this kind of decision because we are dealing with facts that date back to 2010,” Tebas explained.
Tebas does not think the charges will herald a new era of financial control in England, and he is confident that other English Premier League clubs have also joined Manchester City in excessive spending in football.
The president of La Liga stated, “I am sceptical because I know that it is not only Manchester City that has similar problems; there are other Premier League clubs that have also breached their financial regulations, and the league is not acting as it should have been acting for years in this respect.”
La Liga’s president slammed the English Premier League and insisted that a potential European Super League would not be a smart way to compete with its riches.
