A delegation from the Ministry of Youth and Sports led by Honourable Evans Opoku Bobie, on behalf of President Nana Akufo Addo, donated GHC 50,000 to former Black Satellites coach Sellas Tetteh to help meet his medical expenses.
Sellas Tetteh, the only local coach to win a competition sanctioned by the International Association of Football Federation (FIFA), gained notoriety on social media after revealing in an interview with Sports Obama TV that he did not receive any compensation for his team’s victory in the U-20 FIFA World Cup in Egypt.
Sellas told Sports Obama TV, “I have been discussing with Kurt Okraku [the Ghana Football Association president] because since we, the technical team, won the World Cup, they didn’t pay us any money.”
The former head coach of the U-20 team has not been well in recent days and needs serious medical treatment to regain his health, but due to financial problems, he has stayed away from the hospital.
After seeking assistance from the Ghanaian populace, Sellas Tetteh gained the sympathy of some individuals and an organization, which supported the former head coach’s ability to access a hospital for medical relief.
On the 27th of January 2023, Alpha Lotto Limited, a private lotto operator in Accra, presented a cheque of GHC 50,000 to Ghana’s only Under-20 FIFA World Cup winning coach, Sellas Tetteh, for his well-being.
The captain of the side under Sellas Tetteh’s directive at the U-20 World Cup in 2009 in Egypt, André Morgan Rami Ayew, made a humanitarian action by donating an undisclosed amount to his former head coach on the 17th of February, 2023.
The donation was made on Andre’s behalf by his mother, Maha Ayew, and his spokesperson, Fiifi Tackie, to the former head coach at his residence.
Evans Opoku Bobie, the deputy minister of sports, led a delegation to the coach on Monday, February 20, 2023, and presented Sellas Tetteh with a donation of GH50,000 after he had pleaded with the sports ministry and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to do their best to get him what he deserves.
According to a statement from the ministry, President Nana Akufo-Addo made the donation to assist Tetteh in meeting the coach’s medical needs.
The statement read, “On Monday, February 20, 2023, the Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Evans Opoku Bobie, led a delegation of Ministry officials to pay a visit to the ailing former coach of the Black Satellites, Mr. Sellas Tetteh, at his residence in Accra.”
And it concluded with a caption: “The purpose of the visit was to ascertain the health condition of the coach and also to make a cash donation of fifty thousand Ghana cedis (GHc50,000) on behalf of H.E. @NAkufoAddo to meet the medical expenses of the coach.”
