Kurt Simeon Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association, and the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Committee have begun work on a directive that will allow the Ghana Premier League to operate autonomously.
At the end of the 2021–2022 league season, the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council approved the implementation of an autonomous Premier League beginning the 2023–24 season instead of the 2022–23 season.
Following a meeting between the clubs and the implementation committee, the decision-making body of the FA approved the recommendations of the 18 Premier League clubs and the Autonomous Premier League Implementation Committee for the full implementation of the independently managed league.
This necessitated the formation of the autonomous Premier League Implementation Committee, which comprised Togbe Afede XIV, the Board Chairman; the vice chairman, Dr. Toni Aubynn; Willie Alhassanie; Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh of the FA’s Club Licensing Board; the GFA General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo; and the Administrative Manager of Asante Kotoko, Emmanuel Dasoberi.
To prepare for complete implementation in the 2023–24 season, the committee will carry out procedures like registering the league company, approving the Rules Book, setting licensing standards, holding education seminars, and developing change management strategies.
The operations of the autonomous Premier League Implementation Committee began when it had a series of meetings with the Premier League clubs on how to commence with the Ghana Premier League being run separately from the Ghana Football Association.
The Ghana Premier League has been registered as a company limited by shares with the Registrar of Companies of Ghana, the autonomous Premier League Implementation Committee informed clubs during a meeting on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at the World Trade Centre in Accra.
The eighteen clubs were also informed of the opening of each club’s bank account specifically for the Ghana Premier League Limited; an explanation given to the clubs indicated that each premier league club owns a share of the nineteen shares, with the Ghana Football Association owning one special share.
The meeting’s chair, Togbe Afede XIV, commended club representatives for their outstanding contributions and discussions, which he said clearly indicated their dedication to the new company.
