The Black Stars’ safest pair of hands at the World Cup in Qatar, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, has been elected as the best goalkeeper in the Swiss Super League.
He has already won the Swiss Super League Best Player First Half of the Season for his club, St. Gallen, in the 2022–2023 season.
The Swiss Association of Football Players, Switzerland’s branch of FIFPro, named the 26-year-old St. Gallen number the best in his position.
Ati-Zigi, who debuted in the World Cup and Ghana’s first group game against Portugal in Qatar, was a key figure for St. Gallen this season, appearing in 30 league games and keeping three clean sheets.
The Ghanaian goalkeeper, under contract with the Swiss Super League club until 2025, faced 146 shots in those 30 games, saving 103 of them (the most in the league), giving him a 70% save rate while conceding 44 goals, averaging 1.5 goals per game.
Ati-Zigi’s team currently sits seventh in the league standings after 33 league games. They are 40 points ahead of Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s FC Zurich.
The former Red Bull Salzburg goalkeeper put in stellar performances week after week, proving himself an invaluable asset to the club, where he made 3.5 saves per 90 minutes.
Additionally, Ati-Zigi showed his skill in stopping penalties, stopping two of the ten spot-kicks he faced throughout the season.
Ati-Zigi became Ghana’s primary goalkeeper after Joseph Wollacott’s injury just before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and he has since excelled in the position.
