Dr. Kwame Kyei, the Executive Board Chairman of Asante Kotoko, was appointed in June 2020 by the club’s Life Patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to lead a 12-member Board of Directors.
The formation of the new board was part of the club’s restructuring process in order to comply with the Ghana Football Association’s club licensing regulations.
Dr. Kwame Kyei’s recommendation led to the 12-member Board of Directors appointing former Ghana Football Association presidential candidate Nana Yaw Amponsah to direct Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s daily operations.
Both had served in their respective roles at Kumasi Asante Kotoko for the previous three seasons, and the mandate given to the Board of Directors by the club’s Life Patron will expire at the end of the football season in June 2023.
During their three-season tenure at Kumasi Asante Kotoko, the media speculated that the two top officials, Executive Board Member Dr. Kwame Kyei and his employee, Chief Executive Officer Nana Yaw Amponsah, had a hostile aversion to each other.
In an interview with Wontumi Radio/TV in Kumasi, the Chief Executive Officer, Nana Yaw Amponsah, explained to the club’s supporters what the circumstances were surrounding his employment relationship with the Executive Board Chairman, Dr. Kwame Kyei.
Nana Yaw revealed, “The relationship that should have existed between a board chairman and his chief executive officer at the start of my appointment no longer exists. I will be surprised if he says he has no problem with me.”
Nana Yaw Amponsah unfolded to the fans what Dr. Kwame Kyei had reported to a board member about the problem created by him at an official meeting.
“Dr. Kwame Kyei told Nana Ankobeahene that I (Nana Yaw Amponsah) had taken Kotoko’s players away from his hotel. This is an official statement I have heard from the Executive Board Chairman during a meeting:” Nana Yaw Amponsah let the cat out of the bag.
“I was not trained to meet hatred with hatred,” the Chief Executive Officer notified Dr. Kwame Kyei.
