Ghana’s Black Meteors have arrived in Rabat, Morocco, for the 2023 TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations.
Coach Ibrahim Tanko and his team are part of a group of eight nations that have descended in Morocco, ready to compete in this year’s continental tournament for players under the age of 23.
The Black Meteors will play their first match of the competition on Sunday, June 25, 2023. They will compete against their West African counterparts, Congo, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
The team is attempting to secure an Olympic Games football participation slot after failing at their previous attempt in 2019, finishing fourth in the 2019 edition after being edged on penalties by South Africa.
Ghana has been absent from subsequent Olympic games scheduled after Athens 2004, failing to play football in 2008 when Beijing hosted, failing to play in the 2012 London Olympic Games, and Rio de Janeiro in 2016, but in 2020 it was cancelled due to the pandemic.
The former coach who led the Black Meteors during the 2019 TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt has the second opportunity to help Ghana overturn that canker of failing to participate in football at the Olympics since 2004.
Tanko, who was re-appointed just over a year ago on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, has put together a final 23-man squad for the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, 11 of whom are foreign-based players.
The 11 foreign-based players on Ibrahim Tanko’s team for the challenge in Morocco are Fatawu Issahaku, Ernest Nuamah, Daniel Afriyie-Barnieh, Jordan Amissah, Zubairu Ibrahim, Emmanuel Essiam, Nathaniel Adjei, Edmund Arko Mensah, Terry Yegbe, Emmanuel Yeboah, and Salim Adam.
The enterprising team of editors at www.atspo.com has colligated Ibrahim Tanko’s last team in Egypt, and that of his team ready for the challenge in Morocco which the best three automatically qualifies for the Olympics Games in France next year.
The former Black Stars player, Ibrahim Tanko, repeated the number of foreign-based players from his previous edition of 11 and should be able to reclaim Ghana’s Olympic Games qualification slot since they last reached the final hurdle.
