On Saturday, June 23, 2023, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will officially kick off the 4th edition of the quadrennial African football competition known as the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
Morocco will host the event for the second time since it began in 2011, making it the second time Morocco has hosted the AFCON U-23 Championship.
The two locations in the cities of Tangier and Rabat where all fourteen games will be played from Saturday, June 23, 2023, to Saturday, July 8, 2023, are the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier and the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The eight competing teams have been divided into two groups, A and B, where Group A comprises Morocco, Ghana, Congo, and Guinea, and Group B consists of Egypt, Mali, Gabon, and Niger.
The mindful team of editors at www.atspo.com has reviewed the performances of the eight competing teams in the previous U-23 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Three teams are making their debuts in the 2023 U-23 AFCON Championship: Congo, Guinea, and Niger, and coincidentally, two of the debutants are placed in Group A, making that group easier to compete in.
Gabon, Ghana, and Morocco are the teams making their second appearances in the AFCON U-23 Championship, with Gabon winning the inaugural competition in 2011. Morocco and Ghana had the best results, finishing as finalists in 2011 and fourth in 2019, respectively.
Mali is the only team making its third appearance in the U-23 AFCON Championship, having failed to qualify for the inaugural tournament in Morocco in 2011. Mali has qualified for all subsequent tournaments, but has never advanced past the group stage.
Egypt is the most successful of the eight teams competing in the U-23 AFCON Championship; they have competed in every championship since its inception in 2011, and they are the defending champions after hosting and winning the previous edition.
