Bechem United's Communications Director Emmanuel Atuahene has explained why Hafiz Konkoni chose Tanzanian giants Young Africans over Accra Heart of Oak.
After parting ways with Bechem United, the first player from Ghana’s betPawa Premier League to be called up to the Black Stars under Chris Hughton, Hafiz Konkoni will play in the Tanzanian League.
The 23-year-old striker officially signed a two-year contract with Yanga when he arrived in Tanzania last Saturday, July 29th, 2023, after passing his medical examination and completing all other documentation for his transfer to the Citizens.
Bechem United’s arrowhead Hafiz Konkoni was a member of the Black Stars squad that competed in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar in Antananarivo.
The striker, who joined Bechem United from Bolga All Stars in 2017, has left the club after finishing the 2022-23 betPawa Premier League season with 15 goals, three fewer than leading top scorer Abednego Tetteh.
The news of Konkani’s move from Ghana to Tanzania has surprised many Accra Hearts of Oak supporters. In an interview, the striker revealed that negotiations were underway with Alhaji Akambi for him to join the Rainbow outfit.
“We are still negotiating, yes.” “Alhaji Akambi is an important figure. He wants me to come and help the team, which makes me proud. It is not easy for someone of Alhaji Akambi’s caliber to always contact you,” Konkoni told GhanaSportspage.
The Communications Director of Bechem United, Emmanuel Atuahene, explained on Akoma FM in Kumasi the reason for Konkani’s decision to sign with the 2022-2023 CAF Confederation Cup finalist, Young Africans, despite having begun negotiations with Hearts of Oak.
Atuahene explained, “Frankly, the offer proposed for the signature of Hafiz Konkoni by Hearts of Oak was relatively low as compared to Young Africans. Hearts of Oak proposed one-tenth of the offer by Yanga.”
