Richmond Lamptey, an Asante Kotoko player who joined the team from Inter Allies for the 2021–2022 season, has stated an action he intended to take during the alleged match-fixing period.
A couple of seasons ago, there were allegations that Lamptey and some of his fellow players from Inter Allies had fixed a match against Ashanti Gold FC, a club that no longer exists.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) banned the lanky midfielder, but the case was sent to the Court of Arbitration for Sports by the previous management led by Nana Yaw Amponsah, and Lamptey was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.
A portion of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) report directed the Ghana Football Association to pay Richmond Lamptey $3000.
During an interview with Asante Kotoko media, while the team was staying in Beposo, Lamptey spoke about the difficulties he encountered and the ideas that went through his mind.
“It was very painful. Since the issue came up, I haven’t really spoken about it. It was a very difficult time for me. It was painful to witness my parents’ lamentations,” Lamptey said in an interview with Asante Kotoko media.
Richmond Lamptey described how the Ghana Football Association’s suspension of him during that time had an impact on his play.
Richmond Lamptey revealed, “It really affected my game, going out became a problem for me, and even when I go on social media and see some comments, I get discouraged. There was a point when I was contemplating retirement.”
Lamptey thanked the club’s management for their unwavering support during the ordeal.
He expressed his relief at the ban being lifted and his name being cleared, saying, “I want to thank management for bringing the matter to CAS, and I feel vindicated now.”
