Harry Maguire Jacob’s mother issued a stern statement in response to the abuse directed at her son, a central defender for Manchester United and England.
In recent days, the Manchester United star has come under fire for scoring an own goal while playing for England against Scotland.
The discussion surrounding Maguire prompted England manager Gareth Southgate to call it “a joke,” and the player’s mother, Zoe, posted a strongly-worded statement on Instagram defending her son.
The criticism of England’s lanky centre-back, Maguire, continued in Saturday night’s match against Ukraine, which drew criticism from fans due to his bit-part role for United in recent months.
Maguire’s mother, Zoe, responded on social media, including her official Instagram, with a post defending her son in response to some nasty criticism.
“As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits, and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life, never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country,” Zoe captioned on her Instagram, fitmumzoe.
Zoe continued in her statement, “I was there in the stand [at Hampden] as usual. It’s not acceptable what’s been created over nothing. I understand that in the football world, there are ups and downs, positives and negatives, but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’.
“For me, seeing him go through what he’s going through is not okay. I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today.”
In conclusion, she emphasised her son’s mental toughness, which she believes Maguire can use to deal with issues in his career.
“Harry has a massive heart, and it’s a good thing he’s mentally strong and can handle it, as others may not be able to. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody.”
