Asante Kotoko's Ugandan international Steve Desse Mukwala scored twice against Tano Bofoakwa to round out the first round of the 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League.
Steve Mukwala joined Asante Kotoko on a free transfer from Ugandan River Authority FC for two years, with the option to extend for another year in August 2022.
The Ugandan scored 11 goals in his debut season of the Ghana Premier League, and by the end of the previous season’s first round, he had produced 8 goals, a figure he has repeated at the end of the season’s first round.
During the early stages of the season, Steve Desse Mukwala did not play for Asante Kotoko, but he did get his first league game of the season against Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun’s Park, which Kotoko lost.
The Ugandan, Mukwala, recorded a total of eight goals at the end of the first round against Nations FC, Legon Cities, Berekum Chelsea, and Real Tamale United, of which two separate braces were scored against Hearts of Oak and Tano Bofoakwa.
Mukwala scored his first goal at Sunyani Coronation Park last Saturday in the 20th minute when central defender Kelvin Oppong and goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi failed to defend a ball at the edge of the penalty box, allowing the striker to tap in an empty net.
Richmond Lamptey of Asante Kotoko assisted their top scorer, Steve Mukwala, to complete his brace in the 80th minute when he dazzled Kelvin Oppong inside the penalty box.
During the post-match press conference after Kotoko’s away win at Sunyani Coronation Park, David Ocloo, the assistant coach of the Porcupine Warriors, highlighted Steve Mukwala’s breathtaking goal-scoring ability in his last five league games.
David Ocloo told Atakorah Raphael of www.atspo.com that Mukwala has now recovered from an injury that had kept him out of games at the start of the season after beating Bofoakwa Tano.
Ocloo disclosed, “It’s about his fitness; during the pre-season, he was nurturing a whole lot of injuries, so at the beginning of the season he was playing through pain, but now he is totally fit, so you could see that he is playing without any difficulties, so everything comes naturally.”
