Richmond Nii Lamptey, a brilliant midfielder for Kumasi Asante Kotoko, has been named to Chris Hughton's final squad for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
Chris Hughton spoke to the media at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, January 1st, 2024, to announce his final squad for the continent’s prestigious national tournament.
Chris Hughton’s final 27-man squad for Ghana’s redemption at the TotalEnergies African Cup of Nations (AFCON) includes three goalkeepers, nine defenders, eight midfielders, four wingers, and three forwards.
In comparison to the previous tournament in Cameroon, where the Black Stars of Ghana had five players from the local league, Chris Hughton reduced the number of local-based players for the Ivory Coast tournament to three.
Chris Hughton has chosen three players from the Ghana Premier League to join the Black Stars of Ghana: Abdul Fatawu Hamid and Jonathan Sowah of Medeama Sporting Club, as well as Richmond Lamptey of Asante Kotoko.
Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Richmond Lamptey’s boss at two different clubs, praised the midfielder’s extraordinary performance on the pitch, which earned him a call-up.
Richmond Lamptey, who assisted one of Steve Mukwala’s braces against Tano Bofoakwa last Saturday at Sunyani Coronation Park, will have the opportunity to reunite with former teammates such as Majeed Ashimeru and Gideon Asante following their departure from the West Africa Football Academy (WAFA).
Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum praised Lamptey’s inclusion in the final 27-man squad announced by Chris Hughton on his official social media handle on Twitter.
“Your dedication, hard work, discipline, and passion to play and excel at the top level have paid off! Congratulations, Nii! You Are The Man! ” Dr. Ogum published.
