The men’s 32nd edition & women’s 23rd edition of the Africa Cup for Club Champions [ACCC] has kicked off in Accra, Ghana.
Accra will be the centre of some great hockey games with the tournament taking place over the next six days with 14 clubs from four countries participating in the inter-club competition.
The men’s clubs participating are Eastern Company (Egypt), Tairat (Egypt), Zamalek (Egypt), Ghana Army (Ghana), Ghana Police Service (Ghana), Ghana Revenue Authority (Ghana), Wazalendo Kenya, Kada (Nigeria) and Police Machine (Nigeria).
The women’s clubs taking part are Ghana Prisons, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Revenue Authority, Delta Queens Nigeria and Plateau Queens Nigeria.
Addressing the media, the president of the Ghana Hockey Association, Dr. Benjamin K.D Asante says he hopes Ghana hosting the Africa Cup for Club Champions will make the sport more attractive to the youth.
“I expect that at the end of the competition, the interest in the sport would’ve increased a notch. It is good to see young people involved in the sport, especially those in our secondary schools. Football is great, basketball is also great but we need to expand their horizon and increase their interest in it. So I hope that in the next few days, word will get to these young people and increase their taste for hockey,” he said.
The commencement of the tournament saw Zamalek beat Wazalendo by a 2-1 scoreline, GRA Ladies convincingly beat Plateau Queens 3-0, Ghana Police men’s team edged Eastern Company 1-0 and Ghana Police women’s team losing 1-0 to Delta Queens.
