A two-time winner of Champions League (CL) as a manager of Barcelona, Guardiola has voiced out the reason he overthinks and deploy “stupid tactics” in Europe’s most prestigious club competition as he gets ready for quarter final hurdle against Atletico Madrid.
Speaking to the press ahead of Tuesday’s game at the Etihad Stadium the English Premier League’s defending champion gaffer is battling for another CL trophy after ending his contract with Barcelona.
He was knocked out of the competition as manager for Bayern Munich and his present club, Manchester City although he has won the domestic league titles at Germany and England respectively.
Pep has not won the trophy in 11 years and his team is in the competition which he desires to win the trophy on the third time in his coaching career, he is very watchful heading into Tuesday’s battle as City are up against an Atletico side that knocked out Manchester United in the previous round and Guardiola said there was a ‘misconception’ about how Diego Simeone sets up his teams.
He said in the interview why he comes up with “stupid tactics” in Champions League games, “In the Champions League I always overthink — new tactics, tomorrow you will see a new one. I overthink a lot, that’s why I have very good results in the Champions League, It would be boring if I always played the same way. If people think I play the same against Atletico and Liverpool, I don’t like (that).”
Guardiola expressed the night of Champions League football ahead of the game, “The movements are different, and the players are all different with different personalities. That’s why I overthink and create stupid tactics. Tonight I take inspiration and I’m going to (come up with) incredible tactics tomorrow.”
