The former Board Chair of Ghana Gas Company and a former Minister of State in President John Agyekum Kufuor’s government, Christine Churcher, disclosed in her congratulatory message to the Kotoko team that represented Ghana and won at Benin last Monday.
Kumasi Asante commenced their 2022/2023 CAF Champions League preliminary round match against RC Kadiogo in Benin’s Stade de l’Amitié Général Mathieu Kérékou. On the stroke of full time, Isaac Oppong Neymar chipped a ball past seasoned goalie Aboubacar Sawadogo.
The match was supposed to be played in Burkina Faso, but it had to be moved to Benin because RC Kadiogo’s long-standing stadium was being renovated and thus was disqualified by CAF, and thus the venue in Benin was the preferred venue.
The Ambassador to Benin, Madam Christine Churcher, who was a member of the 21 Ambassadors and High Commissioners who were appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on May 26th, 2021 as Ambassador to Benin, has shown great hospitality to Kotoko’s contingent that arrived in Benin till the game ended.
The delegation enjoyed a gratifying welcome from The Honourable Ambassador when they arrived in Benin. She accompanied a delegation from the Ghana embassy in Benin to the squad to show support for the Porcupine Warriors in their encounter against Rail Club de Kadiogo in the first round of the preliminary phase.
Even though it was played behind closed doors, Madam Christine Churcher was at the stadium. She stayed to cheer for the squad the entire game while wearing her Kotoko shirt, and after the win, she went to the locker room.
The Chief Executive Officer, Nana Yaw Amponsah, introduced her to the delegation in the dressing room, where the C.E.O confessed that the Ambassador, Madam Christine Churcher, is the best person he has watched a football match with at a stadium, emphasizing the faith Her Excellency portrayed when Kotoko had not gotten a goal until the last minute mark.
In a video, Madam Christine Churcher said, “I’m more excited than you. For me, until the final whistle goes, you cannot say your team has not won. I believe in that. When the final whistle goes, I give up, but I was sure that even if it remained two minutes or one minute, before the final whistle, we would score. You’ve done well. It is Ghana which has won, it is not Kotoko.”
