Gladson Awako, a member of Ghana’s U-20 team at the 2009 African Youth Championship in Rwanda and a five-year player for Congolese giants TP Mazembe, has dedicated his goal to Ghanaian musical great Ozi Ozaa.
He captained the team to their first BetPawa Premier League victory after three games, and it was a victory that provided the new technical head, Slavko Matić, a delightful experience of Ghana football after succeeding Samuel Boadu, who had previously handled the Phobians.
Gladson Awako scored his first goal after participating in 33 BetPawa Premier League games. In his debut game with the Phobians on December 15, 2021, he scored his last goal in the BetPawa Premier League against Elmina Sharks, who had just been relegated.
The captain of the Black Galaxies for CHAN 2023 in Algeria has scored two goals for Accra Hearts of Oak and usually gives the team the needed maximum points; he assisted Isaac Mensah to square the score after Bibiani Gold Stars took the lead in the first half.
Gladson Awako produced a signature spectacular free kick to secure a comeback for the Phobians on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at Accra Sports Stadium.
Slavko Matić, Accra Hearts of Oak’s new head coach, reacted to Gladson Awako’s five-star performance as captain on his first Ghana Premier League game after joining the rainbow family.
When asked about his thoughts on Awako’s free-kick, Matic saw him as more of a leader than a captain.
He started, “Awako is one of the leaders of the team. It is a coincidence that he has the captain’s band today. We don’t need captains, we need leaders.”
Gladson Awako on his official Twitter account wrote a caption devoted to the hard-fought win last Saturday to the late Afrobeat icon Ozi Ozaa on hearing of his sudden death.
According to an update on @Awako10 spotted by the vigilant editors of www.atspo.com, “captaining a side comes with honour. However, doing that for a great club like Hearts of Oak is overwhelming, especially leading the boys on the pitch to fight for the maximum points game to our late and long-serving Ozi Ozaa. Gone but won’t be forgotten. @HeartsOfOakGH. “
