A former student of Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (PRESEC), George Addo Junior, has switched camps from Multimedia to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
After working on the Ghanaian and African scenes for more than ten years, the astute Sports Broadcast Journalist George Addo Junior has joined the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
George has spent the last ten years working with Ghana’s largest media conglomerate, the Multimedia Group Limited, and will use that experience to help the BBC cement its position as the leading sports news platform in Africa and the world.
After Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and Ibrahim Sannie Daara, George is the third Ghanaian sports journalist to join the BBC and work on-site in the United Kingdom.
George has a bachelor’s degree in linguistics and psychology from the University of Ghana and a post-graduate certificate in sports marketing and communication from the Global School of Business in the UK.
George’s passion for sports dates back to his days as a student. He was a key figure in the University of Ghana’s Sports for Development Programme and conducted extensive research for the Ghana Universities Sports Association during his time there.
George rose to the position of Head of Sports at Radio Univers, the campus station, where he oversaw the strategic coverage of two University of Ghana Sports Association games: the West African Universities Games and the World University Games.
George transitioned to Joy FM with ease, and for nine years, he served as the radio station’s lead football commentator.
In this capacity, he provided top-notch commentary for several important sporting events, including five Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competitions, two European football championships, five UEFA Champions League seasons, three FIFA World Cup tournaments, and seven Ghana Premier League campaigns.
George was nominated three times for the PAV Ansah Communications Award under the prestigious EMY Africa Awards programme and was named one of the best English commentators Ghana has ever produced by the venerable Mirror newspaper. His commentary on radio and television is crystal clear, distinct, and captivating.
Additionally, George has been highlighted on some of the most well-known and significant media platforms in the world, including SuperSport, talkSPORT, Newzroom Afrika, DW, and the BBC, which is now his home.
George started his new job at the BBC in March, and since then, he has frequently filled in as a football reporter on the station’s weekend Sports World radio show.
Despite having a permanent home at the BBC, Addo continues to produce a few radio and television shows for the Multimedia Group in Ghana because the BBC is a partner station there.
