Heart of Lions, based in Kpando, was one of the three teams whose participation in the 2023-2024 betPawa Premier League was announced to members of the Ghana Football Association (GFA)'s 29th Ordinary Congress.
Heart of Lions was the first club to qualify from the second tier to the Premier League; they have gained promotion to play in next season’s Premier League alongside Nations FC and Tano Bofoakwa.
After a stellar performance in the 2022-2023 Access Bank Division One League, they were crowned Zone 3 champions on Match Day 24 after topping the Zone 3 table with 59 points and four matches remaining.
Dr. Randy Abbey, the owner and bankroller of Heart of Lions who also serves on the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, has hinted at the type of players his team plans to sign ahead of the 2023-2024 betPawa Premier League.
After a short interview with Raphael Atakorah of www.atspo.com, Dr. Randy Abbey specified the kind of players that will join the team that excelled to secure promotion and how the coaches have attempted to improve the team.
When asked if Heart of Lions fans should expect any big-name players to join the team because they will watch Premier League games after being denied Premier League football, the winner of the Ghana Journalists Association’s 2012 Best Radio Talk Show Host Award was straightforward in his response.
Dr. Randy Abbey explained, “We will make sensible signings. We will sign players based on what our needs are. The coaches have submitted a list of areas and players that they would want to acquire to improve the team, and we are working on that.”
After being relegated in the 2014/15 season, the former Premier League side has returned to the Ghana Premier League after an eight-year absence of five league seasons.
