Raheem Shaquille Sterling, the 2018-19 PFA Young Player of the Year, was sensational as Chelsea defeated Luton Town 3-0 on Friday night.
Chelsea beat Luton Town 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, with Raheem Sterling scoring twice and assisting on another for Nicolas Jackson, giving Mauricio Pochettino his first win as manager.
Sterling, who joined the club for £47.5 million, put Chelsea ahead in the 17th minute with a weaving run that started out wide and beat three Luton players before finding the bottom corner with a left-footed shot.
Chelsea took a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute after 28-year-old Sterling expertly converted Malo Gusto’s low cross inside Luton Town’s penalty area.
Sterling set up Chelsea’s final goal of the night with a brilliant first-time cross that took a slight deflection before being swept in by Nicholas Jackson for his first Premier League goal.
After the victory at Stamford Bridge, Sterling, who has 82 caps for the Three Lions of England, spoke with Sky Sports about why his performances are improving every week, particularly in the third match under Mauricio Pochettino.
In the post-match press conference, he exuded confidence and belief. He emphasised that he had spoken with his head coach a week before their season’s third game.
Sterling said, “I had a conversation with the gaffer earlier last week, and we have gone through the role, and I know exactly what he needs from me, and it is as simple as that. I need to get on the back foot and drive at players, which is when I am most effective.”
“My love for football is too much, and I am too young at 28 to let my career fizzle out. I need to maintain the standards I have set myself for the last few years and keep going,” Sterling said openly about his future performance.
