The 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is scheduled to start on Sunday, January 14th, 2024, in Ivory Coast.
The biennial international men’s football competition will be held in Ivory Coast for the second time since they last hosted it in 1984.
There are twenty-four officially qualified teams for the 2023 AFCON, with six groups of four countries each.
Group B of the 2023 AFCON comprises Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde, and Mozambique. The Pharaohs and Black Stars are the two teams that can advance.
The astute editors at www.atspo.com have taken stock of the last time Egypt’s Pharaohs and Ghana’s Black Stars were placed in the same group in the prestigious continental competition.
The two countries with 11 gold medals in the competition, seven for Egyptians and four for Ghanaians, were placed in Group D during the 2015 AFCON held in Gabon.
The two nations played all three group stage games at the same venue, the Stade de Port-Gentil stadium in Port-Gentil, Gabon, with Egypt winning the group and Ghana finishing second.
Egypt’s Pharaohs drew with Mali in the first game of the group stage, defeated Uganda in the second round, and defeated Ghana’s Black Stars in the third game to finish with 7 points from two wins and a draw.
Ghana’s Black Stars defeated Uganda in the first game, won their second game against the Eagles of Mali, and lost the third round of games to Egypt by a goal to zero in the 11th minute when Mohammed Salah scored. Bakary Papa Gassama, the experienced referee, officiated the match.
Eventually, both teams made it to the final four of the competition after qualifying from the group stage. Regretfully, Ghana finished fourth after losing to Burkina Faso, and Egypt lost to Cameroon in the grand finale.
