Kumasi Asante Kotoko will play at the Golden City Park in Berekum on Saturday, May 18, 2024, as Berekum Chelsea hosts its fifth club in the 2023-24 Ghana Premier League season.
Berekum Chelsea, the Ghana Premier League champions in 2010-2011, was defeated 3:0 at Berekum Golden City Park by Accra Hearts of Oak ten days ago.
Berekum Chelsea’s shot-stopper, Obeng Sekyere Gregory, failed to keep a clean sheet in two subsequent games, conceding six goals in his side’s last two league games, three against Legon Cities and three against Accra Hearts of Oak.
Obeng Sekyere Gregory, who has been with Berekum Chelsea since the 2020-2021 season in the Ghana Premier League after conceding six goals in his last two games, happens to be the second goalkeeper with the highest number of clean sheets after Matchweek 29.
The Ghana Football Association’s official statistics show that Great Olympics’ Benjamin Asare has the most clean sheets with thirteen, followed by Obeng Sekyere Gregory with twelve after Matchweek 29.
Gregory, the seasoned stopper, can take pride in keeping a clean sheet during a league match on April 22, 2024, at the Berekum Golden City Park, where Berekum Chelsea defeated Medeama 2:0.
Kofi Tagor, Berekum Chelsea’s Communications Director, hinted in an interview with Raphael Kofi Atakorah on Resurrection FM last Friday that their custodian is prepared and motivated not to concede a goal against Asante Kotoko and the remaining games of the season.
In response to Raphael’s inquiry about the goalie’s desire to hold the record for the clean sheets, the communications director revealed that Gregory was unhappy with his performance in the match against Accra Hearts of Oak.
“I met Gregory last Thursday; before our meeting, he had expressed his disappointment to Chief Executive Officer Obed Nana Kwame Nketiah and head coach Samuel Boadu after conceding three goals against Accra Hearts of Oak. He blamed his defenders for their poor performance in their last home game, and family members expressed their disappointment,” Tagor said.
“He (Gregory) wants to force himself into a position where he was called up to the National U-20 team a few seasons ago; he wants to be the best goalkeeper at the end of the season or the goalie with the most clean sheets. He wants to be in his best form in the last five games, particularly against Asante Kotoko,” Tagor indicated.
